Precautions for Storage of Pyrite
Release time: 2025-08-11

Pyrite, as an important chemical raw material, may cause safety accidents or reduce its quality if not stored properly. Therefore, the following storage precautions must be strictly followed:
Requirements for Storage Environment
- Pyrite should be stored in a dry and well-ventilated warehouse, away from fire sources, heat sources, and direct sunlight. This is because pyrite can undergo slow reactions when exposed to water, possibly producing harmful substances, and high-temperature environments may accelerate its oxidation and other reactions.
- The temperature of the warehouse should be controlled within an appropriate range, generally recommended not to exceed 30°C, and the relative humidity should be kept below 75%. At the same time, the warehouse should be equipped with good rainproof and moisture-proof facilities to prevent rainwater from leaking into the storage area.
Stacking Specifications
- When stacking pyrite, it should be stored separately from oxidants, acids, alkalis and other substances, and mixed storage is strictly prohibited. Because contact between pyrite and these substances may cause chemical reactions, leading to dangerous situations such as combustion and explosion.
- The stacking height should not be too high, generally not exceeding 2 meters, and there should be sufficient gaps between stacks, usually not less than 0.5 meters, to facilitate ventilation and heat dissipation, and to facilitate inspection and operation by personnel.
- Adopt appropriate stacking methods, such as using pallets, to avoid direct contact of pyrite with the ground and prevent moisture erosion from the ground.
Protective Measures
- Obvious safety warning signs should be set in the storage area, such as “No Open Flames” and “Keep Away from Fire Sources” to remind relevant personnel to pay attention to safety.

- Smoking and the use of open flames are strictly prohibited in the warehouse. If hot work is required, strict hot work approval procedures must be gone through, combustibles around should be cleaned up, and sufficient fire-fighting equipment should be equipped to carry out the work under the premise of ensuring safety.
- Operators should wear appropriate protective equipment, such as dust masks and protective gloves, when entering the storage area to avoid direct contact with pyrite dust.
Regular Inspection and Maintenance
- Regularly inspect the facilities of the storage warehouse, including the tightness of doors and windows, the operation of ventilation equipment, and the integrity of rainproof and moisture-proof facilities, and repair them in time if problems are found.
- Regularly inspect the storage status of pyrite, observe whether there are abnormal conditions such as caking and discoloration. If problems are found, corresponding treatment measures should be taken in time, such as separate storage and proper disposal.
Emergency Treatment

- In case of pyrite leakage, immediately isolate the contaminated area of the leakage and restrict personnel access. Operators should wear protective equipment, collect the leaked materials into dry, clean and covered containers with clean shovels, avoid dust, and strictly prohibit contact with oxidants, acids and other substances.
- If a fire breaks out in the storage area, immediately use dry powder fire extinguishers, sand and other materials to put out the fire. It is strictly prohibited to use water to put out the fire, because pyrite may produce harmful gases when exposed to water, and water may also help the spread of the fire. At the same time, call the fire alarm number in time to seek help from professional firefighters.
